Mixed Martial Arts Rules

Unified MMA Ruleset

In 2000 the California State Athletic Commission in America worked on a set of unified rules for mixed martial arts events in the US. California did not sanction an MMA event till 2005 but the rules were put into practice by the New Jersey State Athletic Commission and adopted by most organisations in the US and europe.

Below is a break down of the unified ruleset of MMA in North America:

Rounds

Rounds will be of 5minutes with a 1minute, each contest will last for 3 rounds unless a title is on the line when 5 rounds are possible.

Clothing and equipment

All fighters are only allowed to wear athletic commission approved light (4-6oz) gloves, these gloves are fingerless and allow for decent grabbing as well as protecting bones, approved shorts and an approved gumshield. Shoes and feet protection is not allowed, neither is the standard judo / jiu jitsu gi, including trousers.

Judging

If a fight lasts the full 3, or 5, rounds the decision on a winner will be decided upon by 1 or more judges. A fighter will be awarded points using the 10 point system as seen in boxing. If a round is decided to be a draw both fighters will receive the same amount of points. 10 points will be awarded to the winner of a round as the loser receives 9. Points can be deducted from a fighter that breaks a rule / rules, no fighter will receive less than 7 points for a single round.

Illegal Moves and Fouls

|-Gounging - includes eyes, orifices and any open wound
|-Striking downward on an opponent using the point of an elbow
|-Clawing, pinching or manipulating flesh
|-Grabbing partialy or wholly the throat
|-Kicking, kneeing or stomping a downed opponent's head (any opponent with a hand, knee or body on the floor)[not in Pride]
|-Slamming an opponent to the mat on their head or neck
|-Grabbing gloves and shorts of an opponent
|-Spitting
|-Engaging in unsportsmanlike activities that could cause harm to a fighter
|-Profane language in the arena

|-Attacking after the bell or instruction to stop
|-Ignoring referee's instructions
|-Refusing to engage, consistantly dropping mouth guard and/or faking injury

There are some differences between the main organisations events, even within different events from the same organisation (Pride was known for this), details of these will follow later on as they are seen as secondary to the main unified ruleset.
